toxic politics, change, and trauma

Our world is undergoing enormous change, with more and more people around the globe pushing for a cleaner, healthier, and more humane way of living. Yet there is also tremendous pushback to keep a status quo characterized by inequities in power and profit, and disregard for fellow man.

We are still being traumatized by the divisiveness and disruption of interpersonal relationships, toxic political discourse, rampant spread of conspiracy theories, and the insecurity produced as institutions previously trusted to protect and support us are found wanting.

Some of the effects we are experiencing right now are overt—violent interpersonal clashes; continued mean-spirited, often hypocritical commentary; how every issue seems to have only us-versus-them discourse and no resolution as it is played out in media wars and in community meetings; the inability of various governments to come to meaningful agreement and action in the interests of all. Other factors in active play operate at a lower profile: political and judiciary maneuvering, backroom deals and international conglomerates that ignore the health and welfare of people and planet.

You can recognize in the list below one or more of the scenarios you or your family and friends experienced over the past couple of years:

• The re-creating and re-experiencing of traumatic scenarios of confusion and political upheaval

• The feelings of betrayal, anger, and despair as it gets harder to know who or what source to believe

• Ongoing effects of us-versus-them divisiveness that continue to disrupt harmonious family relationships

• Fear of violence—and the post-traumatic stress of the onslaught of many scenes of interpersonal violence witnessed on media

• Experiences of bully-victim interactions being stirred up by current political events

• The instability and uncertainty induced by shifting international tensions, alliances, and supply chains

One can say it is all temporary illusion—and in the long view, perhaps it is. But to anyone either caught up in these scenarios, or being effected by the way they are playing out, it is stark and hurtful reality. And I lay at the feet of this toxic political, sociocultural, and economic brew the terrible effect of surges in teenage suicidal thinking and despair.

I see people trying hard to return to a “normal” that pretends none of this exists. But these themes and issues stirred up in the here and now have made impressions, and they also are reverberating through all of our energetic and emotional fields in the past of this lifetime, and similar patterns and relationships from past lives.

Rather than downplaying how unsettling or even damaging this atmosphere is, utilizing the therapeutic interventions and Resources of New Regression Therapy (NRT) can be helpful in addressing and healing these traumas, and keeping us steadier and sturdier in the days and years ahead.
